Cloud based Compute Clusters for Power and Energy Industry

January 10, 2011

Axceleon recently launched CloudFuzion™ capabilities in Amazon EC2 by building a 50 machine compute farms in less than 5 minutes. This was possible thanks to our new automated “one click” function that builds production clusters that can be used for science and engineering, power grid transmission analysis and other energy related contingency and dynamic study applications. Clusters can be built as large as needed for the task at hand and resources released when the work is complete. CloudFuzion™s impact on the power/energy industry becomes more apparent as government oversight requirements become more comprehensive, the need for study work increases and the need for more robust engineering becomes the norm. This requires increased compute power without constraining resources and thus reduces costs. Axceleon will be offering a services platform (PaaS) to companies to allow them to build and manage web portal based computing solutions enabled and managed by CloudFuzion™.

EnFuzion Automated WorkflowsAxceleon EnFuzion seriously automates workflow around study work for the power/energy industry. Workflow management features in EnFuzion include;

  • Customize the workflows for stability studies, dynamic studies one time.
  • Easily editable script files allow for rapid changes in workflows or studies needed.
  • Automate the many steps in the process, move/copy files to work locations, execute the study schemes, move results to where needed, perform post-processing to convert to other files formats and build reports automatically.
  • Saves the time to walk through the GUI interface to build study needed.
  • Repeat study schemes from previous sessions as far back as 1 to 5 years.
  • Create special event analysis to perform sensitivities
  • Test and confirm market niche performance easily
  • Advantage Human Resource elements with added technology
  • Knowledge transferred once and workflows build for studies
  • Create system performance data bases to query optimum performance conditions
  • Identify key transfer conditions
  • Approximate equipment control settings
  • Dial in relay protection schemes and lens settings
  • Qualify unique system protection schemes as implemented
  • Query existing data bases for historical validation
  • Align large study schemes with the appropriate computing cluster to automatically manage the study time lines for processing and reporting
  • With EnFuzion managing the workflow all the thousands of studies get done with all errors logged as required to aid the troubleshooting and results verification included.
  • Power Engineers no longer need to stay and “babysit” the study process, it all gets done using EnFuzion
  • Web based GUI available for job submission and job control
  • Future releases to include improved job submission templates for the more popular transmission planning software

EnFuzion and the GPU

A graphics processing unit or GPU is a specialized microprocessor that is better known for offloading and accelerating 3D or 2D graphics processing from the CPU. It is also designed for numerical applications, and for thousands of threads of execution, orders of magnitude more floating point units, and is ideally suited for scientific applications.

Axceleon is working closely with GPU enabled applications and hybrids that combine the best of both GPU and CPU capabilities to enable GPU cluster management with EnFuzion. The ultimate goal is to enable hundreds of GPU’s with minimal network impact.  For more information please contact us directly.
